What are the likely causes of the Gulf War Syndrome?

Skeptic asked:

Many of the 700,000 veterans of the first U.S. invasion of Iraq in 1991 have the chronic illness called “Gulf War Syndrome.”

It took the pentagon 20 years to come clean about agent orange. When a friend who was in Viet Nam said his illness was caused by a defoliant called agent orange (DOW Chemical), I thought he was crazy. Can we trust the Pentagon for straight answers this time? What are the causes of this syndrome?
